Scouting

Crop scouting and its importance

Scouting is one of the most important factors in a successful pest management program and an essential activity for the implementation of a successful IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program.

Scouting is the process of assessing pest pressure and the presence of beneficial insects such as predators and parasitoids in the crop. Scouting allows for the accurate measurement of pest populations over time and helps to determine the infestation levels of pests in order to decide whether it is necessary to implement a control action against the pest or not.

Scouting assists decision making in 3 ways:

  1. Where thresholds are associated with a specific crop scouting enables us to make an immediate decision on whether a control action should be implemented or not.
  2. It allows for the tracking of pest trends during a season.
  3. Thirdly it enables you to compare data over multiple seasons and implement control strategies according to historical data.

Therefore, it is very important to record scouting data and keep the records from season to season in order to develop a history of pest and beneficial population trends over time.

Insectec provides scout training at predetermined dates each year where we teach the ins and outs of scouting as well as how to identify common citrus pests, feel free to contact us for more information.
