Problem: Persistent and escalating mealybug infestation (primarily Delottococcus aberiae) affecting fruit quality and marketability.
In 2022 we started working with a citrus grower in Limpopo who had a severe and persistent mealybug problem. Despite regular chemical sprays, the infestation was spreading, leading to fruit deformation, increased sooty mould, and rejection of export-grade fruit. Traditional control efforts were proving ineffective.
Insectec took a strategic, long-term approach tailored to the unique dynamics of the orchard:
Year 1 (2022):
Year 2 (2023):
Year 3 (2024):
This case highlights how a tailored, integrated approach combining proper spray practices with the correct biocontrol agents can successfully manage even persistent pest problems. Over three years, Insectec helped this grower move from frustration and loss to stability and profitability while building a healthier orchard ecosystem.
Problem: Mealybug populations were rising, and chemical controls alone were proving unsustainable.
At Komati fruits Hectorspruit, managing mealybug infestations has been critical to maintaining crop health and yield. Seeking to reduce chemical interventions and adopt a more sustainable approach, the farm integrated biological control into its pest management program.
Mealybug populations were rising, and chemical controls alone were proving unsustainable. A consistent, high-quality supply of natural enemies was needed to support weekly releases, with precise timing being crucial for success.
In Week 48, Insectec supplied biological control agents (ANA-TEC and COCCI-TEC) on selected blocks of Komati Fruits Hectorspruit. A second release was done in week 49 as part as the targeted mealybug management program. Insectec’s team provided the technical support to guide the release process and monitor the progress.
Insectec played a vital role in the success of the mealybug control strategy at Komati Hectorspruit. The timely release of high-quality biological agents in Week 48 and the observed results by Week 5 demonstrate the effectiveness of a well-planned, biologically based IPM program. Insectec’s consistent service and expert support make them a trusted partner in sustainable pest management.
